HELB Smart Card
Amina Mohamed further instructed all university students to be get their smart cards from HELB to access loans. This will assist in removing physical contact of university deans and students ledger which causes delays.
“It will help the students to pay fees from the tuition e-wallet which is locked by a special system for that purpose only,” she said.
Management of HELB loans
HELB Loan Portal should be used mainly for:
- Tuition
- Books and stationery
- Accommodation and subsistence
Students are advised to desist from diverting the funds to leisure or other family obligations.

Education CS Amina Mohamed announces a 100 per cent penalty waiver to past HELB beneficiaries who clear their loans in lump sum. She said this during the HELB employers’ forum held in Nairobi on Thursday. She stated that the grace period runs from May 3, 2018 to June 30, 2018.
To benefit from this, one must repay the HELB balance in lump-sum. CEO Charles Ringera said 78,000 loanees owe the institution to a tune of Sh8.1 billion.
